What classifies a gym as a public or a private gym? There are a few factors that differentiate a private gym from a public gym. So when we're talking about public or commercial gyms we're talking about YMCA, LA Fitness, Gold’s Gym, and 24hr Fitness etc. Those are gyms that are nation wide corporations. They Have hundreds and hundreds of members and facilities across the country. A private gym is much smaller and local. They have only one location, maybe 2 if it has a good reputation and is growing. Much smaller amount of members and much more of a personal connection to the trainers and other members within that gym.

Size is a good way to determine if your at a private gym or a public gym. Public gyms are twice maybe three times the size of a private gym with much more equipment to use. When you have hundreds and hundreds of members you better have the space to fit them all. Also they have multiple locations to accommodate all of their members. Private Gyms aren't going to have that much space and have to get a lot more creative with their classes and workouts. Private gym won't have as many sets of equipment as a public gym. Just one location for all the members to go to, but there’s not as many members within a private gym so they have the space to accommodate everyone comfortably. Since private gyms are smaller and most times have much less member, you will see a lot of the same faces which will make for friendships and workout partners. This creates a nice family comrade and comfort level within the gym. This makes working out more fun and comfortable for you as well.

One of the biggest differences between public vs. private gym is type of workouts and services that are offered. Most public gyms like a YMCA or LA Fitness, offer their membership, which allows you go to any location, and walk in and do your own workouts on your own at your own pace. Most private gyms are predicated on classes throughout the day or having a personal trainer that you work with individually. Most private gyms don't allow for you to just walk in and lift on your own. Public gyms do offer class throughout the day as well, but the make up of the gym itself is not predicted on class. Some people like that guidance with their workouts and some don't. Private gyms tend to get a lot more creative with their workouts due to space and equipment they own. Most will go to a junk yard get snag huge tires for tire flips that they use during there classes or work seminars, boot camps things like that.

At the end of the day it’s all about personal fitness and personal health. There are multiple ways to go about it and all different types of gyms and workout plans you can use to achieve your goal. Some like more of a smaller more personal setting and location, which they can get some good guidance and structure to their workouts. Some already know what they want to do and how to go about it in the weight room, and just need somewhere to walk in and lift on their own. Bottom line its all about getting into the best shape possible and doing whatever it takes to reach you fitness goals.
